Creating a standout piece on a limited budget can seem like an impossible task. But with the right approach, it’s possible to achieve stunning results without breaking the bank. One of our recent projects perfectly illustrates how creativity and resourcefulness can lead to success, even when working within constraints. 

Back in 2015, the renowned designer Patricia Urquiola introduced a line of round tables for Glas Italia called Shimmer. This collection was characterized by its magical and ethereal appearance, featuring an iridescent and multi-coloured finish that changed depending on the angle of light and the viewer's vantage point. The effect was nothing short of mesmerizing. We admired Urquiola’s work so much that we brought one of her side tables into our office. Every day, we were captivated by how the daylight transformed its appearance, reflecting a spectrum of beautiful colours.

So, when one of our clients from Txengo Apoto approached us with a unique request, we immediately thought of the Shimmer table. The client wanted a bespoke cocktail cabinet that could store his wine collection and serve as a feature piece in his living room. He also wanted the design to celebrate his LGBTQ+ community, infusing the cabinet with a cocktail and disco vibe. 

At first, we weren’t sure how to replicate the effect of the Shimmer table within the budget constraints. We knew we needed to create something that mirrored its iridescent quality, but we needed to do so cost-effectively. After some research and experimentation, we discovered a specialized film that could mimic the same color-changing effect when applied to glass. By combining this film with textured mirrors and carefully designed lighting, we were able to achieve the desired cocktail, disco vibe. 

Applying the film to the cut-to-size glass was another challenge. We decided to adapt a technique typically used for applying car wraps, which allowed us to achieve a smooth, flawless finish that closely resembled the Shimmer table’s unique look. The result was a stunning, cost-effective solution that met our client’s vision and exceeded his expectations.

This project was a perfect example of how creative thinking and resourcefulness can overcome budgetary limitations. By drawing inspiration from a high-end design and finding innovative ways to replicate its effect, we were able to deliver a product that was both beautiful and affordable. It’s a reminder that with the right approach, even the most ambitious design ideas can be brought to life—no matter the budget.
